Mayor’s Newsletter

June 2026

As we move into the summer season, there are many positive things happening throughout our town and community.

The Farmers Market is off to a good start. We will continue the market every Sunday from 12:00 noon until 3:00 PM at Friendship Park. As fresh fruits and vegetables become more readily available throughout the season, the selection and variety will continue to expand. We appreciate everyone who has come out to support our local vendors and community activities.

Please bear with us as we continue working to get our water and sewer billing cycle back to consistent monthly billing. We appreciate your patience and understanding while these adjustments are being made.

The Mayor and Council will hold a Public Hearing on the proposed 2026/2027 Town Budget on Tuesday, June 9 at 6:00 PM in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. Citizens are encouraged to attend and participate in this important meeting regarding the future financial planning of our town.

Our water and sewer rates will be increasing by $18.00 per month for all users effective July 1, 2026. East New Market must offset a $42,340.00 increase from Twin Cities and the Town of Secretary, which operates the wastewater treatment facility. Electricity costs and chemical expenses have increased dramatically. The cost to pump and treat the Town’s water supply has also increased significantly.

This is a difficult time for all of us, and these are expenses that are unfortunately beyond the Town’s control. However, the proposed 2026/2027 budget for East New Market does not include a tax increase. We are continuing to work hard to keep costs down and maintain stable operations for our residents.

Both the Twin Cities budget and the Town’s proposed budgets can be viewed on the Town website under the Government tab at www.townofeastnewmarket.com.

The Events Committee is planning a great Fourth of July celebration at Friendship Park as we celebrate our country’s 250th birthday. Planned activities currently include a landing by the Maryland State Police helicopter unit, a Civil War reenactment group featuring a live cannon demonstration, participation by the East New Market Fire Department, and a youth parade featuring decorated bicycles, golf carts, and four-wheelers that will be judged during the event. We hope everyone will plan on attending this exciting community celebration.

Recently, the Town hosted a luncheon under the tent for the residents of the Depot area. As Mayor, I truly enjoyed spending time speaking with residents, hearing their concerns, and learning more about their needs and ideas for the future of our community. Events like this help strengthen our town and remind us that we are one community working together.

We are continuing efforts to install water and sewer service in Friendship Park, which will be an important improvement for future events and community activities.

The Historic District Commission continues working with residents who own properties that are in need of repairs and improvements. Preserving and protecting the historic character of our town remains a critical part of maintaining the heritage and charm of East New Market for future generations.

Thank you for your continued support of our town, our volunteers, and our community events. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.
