Mayor’s Newsletter

March 2026

I promise you – spring is around the corner. What a winter this has been! Between the snow, ice, and cold winds, we have all certainly earned thewarmer days ahead.

Our Events Committee continues working hard on an exciting lineup for 2026. Our Silent Auction Fundraiser will be held at Johnny’s Tavern on March 8 at 4:00 PM. All proceeds will benefit Mended Hearts. We already have over 40 auction items, and it promises to be a wonderful afternoon for a great cause.

Looking ahead, Easter in the Park will be another great community event, and the committee is also working on launching a Farmers Market at Friendship Park – something many of you have asked for.

I have formally reestablished the Appeals Board, ensuring that our processes are functioning properly and fairly for our residents.

The Council and I are currently applying for two important grants. The first is a Congressional Grant to fund street lighting in The Crossings and Trinity communities along with completing street paving. The second is a grant to create a wildflower garden in the rear of the park designed to attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. This project will enhance our environment while providing beauty and educational opportunities for our community.

We have asked Dorchester County to prioritize discussions with the State Highway Administration to establish a truck detour around town. Heavy truck traffic is increasing and is detrimental to the long-term future of our town.

Additionally, we have contracted for seasonal sidewalk maintenance. The first full application treatment will cover all sidewalks, followed by monthly spot treatments where needed. They have already cleaned up the sidewalks, and they look great.

The Mayor and Twin Cities representatives will attend a mediation session to ensure the Commission is functioning in accordance with its charter. I believe this will be a very positive meeting and the outcome will help both towns – Secretary and East New Market.

In closing, I cannot wait to see the tulips and daffodils begin to bloom and feel that warm spring sunshine again. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

Warmly,
Mayor Gary R. Lucks
